Ryan Adams solo acoustic show in Eugene, Oregon, 10/20/2011.
The first thing Ryan said when he got on stage: “Let’s Rock.”
“Slowly.”
“In a corner.”
This show was amazing and funny as hell and then quiet and serious and then silly. I laughed and cried and some people even fell asleep according to Ryan, who encouraged us to “not clap” after one of his songs to see if “all the people sleeping can stay asleep!” (Tons of banter, all of it in good spirits despite the requisite jerk in the audience trying to ruin it.)
It was almost three hours long. All acoustic. This show definitely could have been a half hour shorter if the man on stage were more organized or set in his ways or whatever, but watching Ryan flip through song sheet after song sheet and get distracted by something and launch into stories about waitress robots and Indiana Jones snakes and nosepickers, I mean, you have to appreciate that you are getting a real person up there. There’s no “fourth wall” as Ryan put it at an acoustic show like this where people just feel they can have a conversation with him and so they do and he deals with it by having a conversation of his own about random stuff and you end up having this kind of miraculous-if-you-go-with-it vibe of these amazingly intimate performances of these super sad songs interspersed with total goofball storytelling.
Highlight: The piano version of New York, New York he played was so heartbreaking to me. And was almost equaled by Ryan testing out a snippet of his hair metal ditty I AM DRUGS, SOMEBODY SNORT ME! (or something like that;)
Good good good.
